Mexico City Activates Phase 1 Environmental Contingency Due to Ozone

The Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis (CAMe) activated Phase 1 of an atmospheric environmental contingency due to ozone in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico. It was reported that at 4:00 PM this Thursday, a maximum hourly ozone concentration of 155 ppb was recorded at the Atmospheric Sciences Center (CCA) station in the Coyoacán borough of Mexico City. The Mexico City Atmospheric Monitoring System indicates that the Valley of Mexico region remains under the influence of an anticyclone that was expected to move away from the country's center, yet its influence intensified today. This has caused strong atmospheric stability, with poor ventilation and humidity, leading to clear skies and intense solar radiation, with maximum temperatures reaching up to 28°C. "The combination of these elements has created favorable conditions for the formation and accumulation of ozone." Recommendations for the population include avoiding outdoor activities and exercise between 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Outdoor events organized by public or private institutions should be suspended during the same hours. Outdoor sports, cultural events, or mass spectacles scheduled between 1:00 PM and 7:00 PM should be postponed. Smoking, especially indoors, should be avoided. Facilitate and continue remote work and conduct errands online to reduce travel. The use of air fresheners, aerosols, paints, sealants, or solvent-containing products should be avoided. Refuel after 6:00 PM and before 10:00 AM; do not refuel after the pump's nozzle safety click has engaged. Check and repair gas leaks at home. Reduce the use of fuels at home by shortening showers to a maximum of five minutes and using covered pots when cooking. On Friday, February 13th, the following vehicles will be prohibited from circulating from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM: Private vehicles with hologram 2, private vehicles with hologram 1 and a final digit of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 0, private vehicles with hologram 0 and 00, blue sticker, plate ending in 9 or 0. Vehicles without a verification hologram, such as old, demo, or new vehicles with temporary permits, foreign plates, or lettered plates, are subject to the same restrictions as hologram 2 vehicles.
